The Benefits of Joining your HOA Board
Like any organization, HOAs are only as good as the people who run them. However, HOA’s can be difficult to manage. If you think you have what it takes, then you should carefully consider becoming part of your HOA board. For HOA’s to be successful there needs to be dedicated individuals to manage and maintain the organization.
Before becoming an official member, be sure you get a clear understanding of how your specific board works. Talk with current and former board members. Learn what they liked and did not like about being a board member. Figure out how much time is required and if you can reasonably devote enough time to fulfill the obligations needed.
Board members are usually required to serve for a specified length of time. So be sure you can commit to an entire term before volunteering. There is a lot of work involved in being on an HOA board, but there can be many rewards as well. As a board member, you will get to know many of your neighbors. You will also have the opportunity to enact real change in your neighborhood.
You can steer the board’s focus on issues that are important to you. You can help improve your neighborhood’s safety, create a better sense of community, add amenities, or improve its visual appeal. Best of all, you will be able to take pride in making a difference in your community.
